Results for Stage 1

The research activities performed in this stage of the project conducted to:

¨ Establishing the analysis method for the total polyphenols content (Folin-Ciocâlteu spectrophotometric method);

¨ Obtaining the optimal method for the extraction of the total polyphenols content from sea buckthorn and sea buckthorn groats; from the tested extraction techniques, the most efficient extraction technique regarding the total polyphenols content was the refluxing (720.05 and 402.48 mg gallic acid / 100 g dry plant grit sea buckthorn groats and sea buckthorn, respectively);

¨ Establishing the spectrophotometric method for the analysis of the total anthocyanins content (pH differential method)

¨  Determining the effect of temperature on antioxidant activity and color of the extracts of buckthorn; these parameters remained stable below 100°C;

¨ The extracts showed antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus.

¨ The best antimicrobial activity presented a meal of buckthorn extract, obtained by sonication for 1 hour at 80°C.
