Resulting summary

Two new dopamine analogues have been obtained, 2-aminomethyl-3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)propionamide and 3,4-dihydroxybenzylidenehydrazine.

These were polymerised under conditions similar to polydopamine, both in bulk and on surfaces. For the bulk polymers their structure, respectively the monomeric units constituting the polymer structure, were proven by specific structural analysis methods such as solid-state NMR, FTIR or MS.

The new monomers/polymers obtained have the ability to adhere to surfaces such as glass, TiO2 nanoparticles or magnetic nanoparticles, which was demonstrated by AFM, zeta potential, thermogravimetric analysis, XPS and electron microscopy.

The optical behaviour of the polymers as well as TiO2 or magnetite nanoparticles was demonstrated by UV-Vis and fluorescence both in solution and by confocal fluorescence microscopy. For magnetic nanoclusters obtained by solvothermal reaction, the biocompatibility was studied on 3 types of cells, HUVEC, A375 and fibroblasts. The clusters are internalized in all these cells, showing fluorescence depending on the combination of cluster type/cell type. This gives them potential applications in theranostics, for simultaneous fluorescence bioimaging/MRI treatments and and/or hyperthermia.
