Summary

The EU and US Department of Energy (DOE) Fuel Cell Technologies Programs maintain a comprehensive effort to overcome barriers for the widespread commercialization of hydrogen and fuel cells technologies including hydrogen production, delivery and storage. Taking into account the major importance of finding high capacity hydrogen storage materials for hydrogen based Fuel Cell vehicles, there is a strong need to validate the data reported in literature and to improve the storage capacity.

The goal of the project is to assess the enhanced hydrogen adsorption by the MOF/catalyst composites reported in literature and to find new materials and methods to improve the H2 storage in these solid state materials.

New approaches for building the intimate contact at the interface of MOF with metal/support catalyst will contribute to a better understanding of the routes and methods with positive effects on hydrogen adsorption by MOFs based composites. Systematic studies will be performed on MOF/catalyst composites with emphasis on: controlled ball-milling procedure, different catalytic metals (Pt, Pd, Ni) or supports, direct synthesis of different MOFs on catalyst, validation of hydrogen uptake measurements, identification of the major factors implied in the hydrogen transfer at the MOF/catalyst interface.
